For example a Christian officer who is compelled to do battle where there is a chance of murdering the adversary. This unquestionably conflicts with the Christian lessons. (Reamer 26). In my view the instance of Hutchinson falls under a deontological quandary since she simply needed to do what she accepts is directly for her guiltless kid. She didnââ¬â¢t decline to do battle since it is against her strict convictions. This article will clarify the utilization of math in stargazing, science, material science, and their connection. The investigation of cosmology is the most seasoned of the physical sciences it started as a motivation. With the end goal of this article, the examination will start with the ancientââ¬â¢s information on this science. They had various perspectives on how those nighttime guides functioned. A large number of these developments considered their appearance and takeoff alongside the climate to comprehend their own reality. Humboldt (1849) expressed, ââ¬Å"Physical laws rely on mean numerical qualities; which shows us the steady in the midst of change.â⬠This change was the establishment of time, time that would help with estimating and clarifying how those aides work. Boorstin (1985) clarifies that, ââ¬Å"The first stupendous revelation was time, the scene of experience.â⬠He went further with his clarification of how significant it was for people to quantify time, in the event that it had been basic, people would have, ââ¬Å"lacked the motivation to examine the sky and t o become mathematicians.â⬠With the utilization of this interest, people looked and figured out how they functioned. Math had made it conceivable to comprehend this part of the universe, yet there were a few contrasts on how they truly functioned. The Greeks were the first to ââ¬Å"propose clarifications for the movements of cosmic articles that depended on rationale and geometryâ⬠Bennett, Donahue, Schneider, and Voit (2004). Math, clarified, and resist the convictions held for a long time. The Greeks made a geocentric model, which puts the earth in the focal point of the universe. This was ascribed, to Thales (c. 624-546 B.C.), which numerous different Greeks held to be genuine significantly after another Greek named Aristarchus (c. 310-230 B.C.) ââ¬Å"Suggested that the Earth circumvents the Sun, a view that eventually won, however until right around 2,000 years laterâ⬠Bennett, Donahue, Schneider, and Voit (2004). Analysis On How Star Wars Movies Have Shaped Popular Culture - 1650 Words
Analysis On How Star Wars Movies Have Shaped Popular Culture (Research Paper Sample) Content: Impact Of Star Wars On Popular Culture Name: Institution: Impact of Star Wars on Popular Culture Popular culture has been defined by many in different contexts. It is influenced mostly by social media and by interactions between people. It influences the way people talk, dress, types of food they eat, how they walk: it becomes their identity. A general definition of popular culture suggests that it is beliefs and practices that are predominant in a society at a given time. Categories of popular culture include entertainment regarding video games, music, films and television, politics, fashion, and technology. When people watch a film and identify with it, they start to dress like the characters in the film, talk like them. You notice that when a film is released, and it has an impact in the society, you will notice how people change their dress code to match that in the film, they take up phrases from the film, social media is full of fanatics who have embraced the culture in the film. This is what happened to Star Wars. Star Wars was not just another film. Since the first relea se of Star Wars on 25th May 1977, the world changed. Up until today, it is still impacting the lives of many which has led to a popular culture of Star Wars (Parker, 2014). Star Wars is a film series whose concept was developed by the legendary George Lucas. It features adventures of beings in another galaxy. Star Wars released three films that formed Star Wars trilogy: Star Wars, The Empire strikes back and Return of Jedi. These films swept people off their grounds both young and old, big and small. Even those who paid little attention to such movies were drawn in. Since then other films have been released, books are written, Star Wars cards produced, costumes designed all of which have greatly contributed to its popular culture. John Storey in his bid to uncover popular culture wrote the book ââ¬Å"Cultural Theory and Popular Culture.â⬠Here he presents six definitions of popular culture that he deems agreeable. The six definitions have their strengths and weaknesses with different objects of contemplation being considered. In the first definition Storey defines popular culture as a culture that is widely favored or well-liked by many people. This basic definition arises from the word popular which refers to well known or familiar with people. Storey defends his definition claiming that the difference between culture and popular culture is what defines popular culture. Regarding popularity, Star Wars is second to none. It is the leading Hollywood movie regarding sales with sales of up to $32 billion in 2016. In 2015, $243 million was generated from the sale of consumer packaged goods. The film ââ¬Å"The Force Awakensâ⬠was a sensation in North America referred to as the most successful movie of a ll time holding the record for the biggest opening weekend. On Facebook, Star Wars official page has about 19 million followers, on Twitter, it has 3.9 million followers, on Instagram it has 9.1 million followers, and on its YouTube page, it has 2.6 million subscribers. If that does not define popularity, then I do not know what does. Star Wars is one of the most popular films in the world which has contributed to its popular culture (Zyck, 2017). In the second definition, popular culture is referred to as the leftover culture after high culture has been decided. When popular culture first came into the fold, it was associated with poor education and lower classes. This led to the belief that it was a culture of those without higher education hence this definition by Storey. This definition has a lot of problems as the definition of high culture is cumbersome. Popular culture and high culture are intersecting sets which make it very hard to define. Star Wars for instance can be considered as both high culture as well as popular culture. The problem with this definition is that it considers the people involved rather than the product. To determine if Star Wars is a popular culture in this case we have to analyze the background of the people rather than the product which is the film. Do we consider the quality of the film or the quality of the people to discern? Films are universal to humans and may be good or bad which makes t his definition inadequate. Star Wars is followed by people across the globe who form this popular culture which makes it hard to define whether it is high culture or the remnants in the name of popular culture. The third definition equates popular culture to mass culture. Mass culture, in essence, is culture brought about by changes in technology that use mass cultural production. When Star Wars was being launched in 1977 technology had greatly advanced which allowed people to access and view the film. Over the years social media has provided an avenue for sharing which constitutes mass culture. Mass culture developed due to exposure to the same media and broadcasted to individuals as opposed to interactions amongst people. Star Wars was broadcasted by Television targeting individuals who then came together and formed their own culture. The fourth definition suggests that popular culture originates from the people. The culture brought about by Star Wars was as a result of people embracing phrases such as ââ¬Å"The force awakensâ⬠and using it in their daily lives, wearing costumes from the film. It is, therefore, people who combed through the films and created a culture from it. The fifth definition of popular culture is described as ââ¬Å"a site of struggle between the resistance of subordinate groups in society and the forces of incorporation operating in the interests of dominant groups in society.â⬠There are people in the society who look down on Star Wars due to the common association of cartoon and imaginary characters. This shows the struggle between the followers of Star Wars and those who look down on it. Lastly, popular culture is informed by recent thinking around the debate of postmodernism. Star Wars showcases a galaxy no one knows about purely imaginary or Scientific which shows its postmodernism. People are attracted to this concept of a foreign galaxy and identify with these characters who define their culture (Parker, 2014). Star Wars rise to popular culture has emanated from its effect on different people be it Science, literature, film and generally on the way people live and interact. To start with, it impacted the world of literature with over two hundred and fifty books written about Star Wars. These Books cover the events of the movies while others go back in time to events leading up to the films. Other books go beyond the films to a time not covered in the films. Star Wars also led to the emergence of groups such as The Vaderââ¬â¢s Fist which is a costume organization that performs in events. A picture of this group is shown below: Another group is The temple of the Jedi Order which is a religion that follows Jediism. This group refers to the force in star wars films as the force of living creation in Jediism (Clark, 2013). Star Wars influence on the film industry is another reason for its popular culture. It stirred advancement in technology that is used in modern film and industry with some examples shown in the photograph below: Leia who ...

Is Al Jazeera Anti-Semitic and Anti-American
With its 24/7 coverage of the Cairo protests garnering praise from media critics, many are calling on more U.S. cable systems to carry the Arabic news network Al Jazeera. But is the Qatar-based network anti-Semitic and anti-American, as some - like Fox News host Bill OReilly - have claimed? And should Al Jazeera - which is presently only available in a few U.S. markets - be offered nationwide? Matthew Baum, a professor of Global Communications and Public Policy at Harvard Universitys John F. Kennedy School of Government, says yes - but with a few caveats. Baum, who watched Al Jazeera fairly regularly when he spent time in Europe in the past few years, says theres no question the mix of editorial views on it are more critical of U.S. policy and Israel, and more sympathetic to Arab perspectives than what youd see on an American network. Baum says its not surprising that Al Jazeera has a more pro-Arab editorial slant. Thats simply reflecting who their customers are, the perspective of the region. And while some of what he heard in Al Jazeera broadcasts annoyed the crap out of me, Baum adds that Americans should have more exposure to what folks in that region think. We tend to be pretty uninformed about whats going on in that part of the world. Eric Nisbet, a communications professor at Ohio State University who has studied Arab media and anti-Americanism, says its important to distinguish between the English and Arabic channels of Al Jazeera. The English channel has a very cosmopolitan perspective and is staffed largely by former corespondents from the BBC and U.S. networks, he says. The Arabic channel, not surprisingly, is aimed squarely at an Arab audience and prides itself on giving voice to a wide range of perspectives from throughout the region. The result? At times it airs the views of extremists, sometimes without challenging them as much as they should, Nisbet says. There are definitely some biases in that they are an Arabic channel for Arab audiences. And yes, there is anti-Semitism, Nisbet adds. Unfortunately in Arabic political discourse there is a great deal of anti-Semitism. The conversation there about Israel and American foreign policy is very different from our discourse in the U.S. Nisbet hastens to add that the channel also frequently features representatives from the U.S. and Israeli governments, and that it is widely watched in Israel. Even given the networks problems, Nisbet, like Baum, believes Al Jazeera, at least in its English-speaking incarnation, should be aired more widely on U.S. television. We as a country need to know what other people think of us, he says. If we really want to make informed decisions about foreign policy and about the opportunities and challenges we face overseas, we need to hear that perspective. Al Jazeera provides a very non-American window on the world that we need to be looking through. Photo by Getty Images Follow me on Facebook Twitter

The Bible Is The Best Gift God Essay - 1225 Words
The Bible, although written by man is God s word to the world. The unity showed in the bible over such a long period of time, and over multiple continents is proof that it was written by something more than just a mere human, and that it was instead written by someone with divine power. Sally Mann free essay sample
Sally Mann photographs the things that she is closest to. ââ¬Å"The things that are close to you are the things you can photograph the best, unless you photograph what you love, youââ¬â¢re not going to make good artâ⬠. Most of her work revolves around her husband, her children, her childhood upbringing and the landscape that is her home. Mann uses an 810 bellows camera, and in the mid-1990s she began using the wet plate collodion process to produce photographs. Some of her photographs contain blemishes, stains and imperfections but she accepts these and believes they are what make the photo. ââ¬Å"If it doesnââ¬â¢t have ambiguity, donââ¬â¢t bother to take it. [Release date: 7/14/2011]. pbs. org/art21/artists/sally-mann/videos Mann was passionate about horses and in 2006, her horse had an aneurysm while she was riding him, Mann was thrown to the ground and the impact broke her back. She made a series of ambrotype self-portraits during the two years it took for her to recover. These self-portraits were displayed at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts as a part of Sally Mann: the Flesh and the Spirit for the first time in November 2010. In the 1970ââ¬â¢s Mann explored many different genres such as landscapes and architecture. She merged still life with portraiture. Mann has produced two series of landscapes: Deep South and Mother Land. In her series What Remains it shows pictures of the decomposing body of her greyhound, to the site where an armed fugitive committed suicide on her property in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. She has experimented with color photography, but seems too remained most interested in black and white. Deep South, 1998 Deep South, 2001 Sally Mann came to the worldââ¬â¢s attention with ââ¬ËImmediate Family,ââ¬â¢ a series of photographs with her children all under the age of ten at the time. These photos show every day activities such as playing, sleeping and eating but it also touches on larger themes such as death and social opinions of sexuality. One day her daughter Jessie came home with a knat bite on her face and it was swollen and bruised. Sally said she was so striking so she put her in front of a wall and documented it (Damaged Child). It was then that Sally Mann realized beautiful photographs were right under her nose and she began photographing her children. These photographs of her children were published as a book and became an international best seller. The book contains around sixty images of her children. Sales of her prints skyrocketed and Time Magazine named Mann ââ¬Å"Americas Best Photographerâ⬠. Thinking about the attitudes people had towards visual culture at the time when Immediate Family was produced, the effect it had on the public was very controversial. To her, they were little more than tender, maternal photographs of her children but there was outrage within the religious community against child pornography and she was called an irrespirable mother. The controversy had the inarguably beneficial fact of bringing the work to the publicââ¬â¢s attention. A lot more people saw the work as a consequence. The reaction of the religious community and others who disagreed with her work says more about the adult viewer than of the child subject. Sally Mann explored the concept of childhood and growing up through a maternal eye. Popsicle Drips, 1985. The Last Time Emmett Modeled Nude, 1987. The image entitled Popsicle Dripsâ⬠shows a young, male torso, with liquid dripping down his lower abdomen. His right hip is tilted to the side, and his arms out of view. When you initially look at the image, it is quite disturbing because of the liquid substance dripping down the boyââ¬â¢s abdomen. Without the explanatory title, the substance could be anything. On first inspection it appeared to me to be dirt, which in my opinion would make more sense. Why would Popsicle drips be on the boyââ¬â¢s naked body in the first place? This naked picture is the only photograph in the entire body of work that shows full frontal male nudity. The viewer may feel uncomfortable looking at the image as it is highly provocative in its subjects pose, and the added Popsicle drips add an element of physicality. Because the artist is a woman and the subject is a male, for some people this caused an issue as it became more sexual. Emmet, the only male of the three children, is seen much less provocatively in the series than the girls are. The photograph ââ¬ËSunday Funniesââ¬â¢, 1991, shows Jessie and Virginia lying naked in a bed really the comics in a newspaper, but Emmett appears with shorts. While the girls are busy acting out a role Mann has conducted, he stares at the camera, almost offended in the way he is being depicted. Even in the almost sadly titled The Last Time Emmet Modeled Nude photograph, the water is obscuring our view of any intimate parts as we only see him from the waist up. This image, above all, shows the modesty and uncertainty that Emmet felt about his modeling. Jessie Mann did an interview with Aperture magazine and here she tells us how Emmet is dealing with the pressure the photographs from his youth has put on him. Emmet is completely daunted by it. He doesnt know what he wants, so he backs away from the whole thing (Jessie Mann). Dirty Jessie, 1985, Sally Mann He is very sick, 1986, Sally Mann Another visibly sensual/sexual image is Dirty Jessie. We see Jessie lying feebly on the grass. Her legs spread and her hands placed over her nipples. Her only clothing is panties and boots. The boots are almost completely off, and the positioning of her le gs looks unnatural and appear broken. The image has been shot from above, objectifying her. Even the name of the photograph suggests something sexual; Dirty Jessie, yet this young child has an innocence that only youth can possess. This photo becomes quite sexual because of the positioning of the camera above her, and the semi-modest placing of her hands covering an intimate feminine place. To describe what childhood really is, Mann utilizes truth in a few of her images. However staged this reality may be, there are some embarrassing and cringe worthy things that happen when you are growing up such as bed-wetting, chickenpox and bloody noses, so Mann documents these also. When the good pictures come, we hope they tell truths ââ¬Å"told slantâ⬠. MANN, S. / REYNOLDS PRICE. 1992. Immediate Family. Phaidon Press Limited. An image that tends to stand out from the rest in terms of reality, is the appropriately named He is Very sick. In this photo it shows Jessie and Emmet sitting in a hospital room, on a bed where a man I presume to be their grandfather lies. The old man re aches his hand towards the camera, clasping the rails of the bed. Jessie looks directly into the camera was a traumatic look in her eye while Emmet looks to have a feigned sadness than a genuine sadness. His arms are crossed defiantly, and he pulls his head away from the camera. The old man in bed is shrouded by light, making his face barely visible. These are private and personal moments that most families endure, and they are the ones that no camera-happy relative would want to capture on film. They are tragic and denied, and I can almost hear the mothers words attempting to explain what is happening to grandpa to her young children. He is Very Sick. Emmet does not seem to understand why he is being photographed, and he is presumably trying to hide his sadness. Jessie seems to be too young to understand that these are very private moments, and that they are not generally photographed. This image brings Manns work back into the realm of reality, and makes it familiar for viewers. Damaged child, 1984, Sally Mann Hayhook, 1989, Sally Mann Damaged Child is another reality based image, in which Jessie appears with a very swollen right eye. Her hair is cropped short, and her androgynous face is determined only by the frilly dress that she wears. Her face is the only thing in focus in the image, and it appears to be jutting out towards the viewer. She wears no smile in the image, and she looks sad and helpless. While other mothers are busy bragging about their child making the soccer team or winning a beauty pageant, Sally Mann is busy showing the less flattering side of motherhood. She is showing the maternal need to tend to her wounded child, and is not concerned about the beauty of it. This is real life and she is not afraid to show it. In my opinion, taking hotographs of her children is her way of showing her love for them, through capturing their lives on film. Jessie says She has a hard time letting us know how much she loves us. But Ive also realized that each one of those photographs was her way of capturing, if not in a hug or a kiss or a comment, how much she cared about us. Capturing the relationship of motherhood and childhood on film reveals a strange look into what a child is, and how they need a mother continua lly, yet still want to figure out their identity on their own so they push her away. Mannââ¬â¢s father was a moralist and an atheist. Mann states in her book ââ¬ËImmediate Familyââ¬â¢, ââ¬ËAs a family, we were simply different. My two brothers and I were the only children in our school required by our parents to sit in the hallways during Bible studyâ⬠.
