The unity showed in the bible over such a long period of time, and over multiple continents is proof that it was written by something more than just a mere human, and that it was instead written by someone with divine power. The bible’s timeline spans centuries, but the impact that the bible has will continue indefinitely. Although there are millions of believers there is also almost an equal amount of skeptics. Because no physical evidence of heaven or hell exists, or no evidence that God is real people don’t believe in Christianity. The image entitled Popsicle Drips† shows a young, male torso, with liquid dripping down his lower abdomen. His right hip is tilted to the side, and his arms out of view. When you initially look at the image, it is quite disturbing because of the liquid substance dripping down the boy’s abdomen. Without the explanatory title, the substance could be anything. On first inspection it appeared to me to be dirt, which in my opinion would make more sense. Why would Popsicle drips be on the boy’s naked body in the first place? This naked picture is the only photograph in the entire body of work that shows full frontal male nudity. The viewer may feel uncomfortable looking at the image as it is highly provocative in its subjects pose, and the added Popsicle drips add an element of physicality. Because the artist is a woman and the subject is a male, for some people this caused an issue as it became more sexual. Emmet, the only male of the three children, is seen much less provocatively in the series than the girls are. The photograph ‘Sunday Funnies’, 1991, shows Jessie and Virginia lying naked in a bed really the comics in a newspaper, but Emmett appears with shorts. While the girls are busy acting out a role Mann has conducted, he stares at the camera, almost offended in the way he is being depicted. Even in the almost sadly titled The Last Time Emmet Modeled Nude photograph, the water is obscuring our view of any intimate parts as we only see him from the waist up. This image, above all, shows the modesty and uncertainty that Emmet felt about his modeling. Jessie Mann did an interview with Aperture magazine and here she tells us how Emmet is dealing with the pressure the photographs from his youth has put on him. Emmet is completely daunted by it. Her legs spread and her hands placed over her nipples. Her only clothing is panties and boots. The boots are almost completely off, and the positioning of her le gs looks unnatural and appear broken. The image has been shot from above, objectifying her. Even the name of the photograph suggests something sexual; Dirty Jessie, yet this young child has an innocence that only youth can possess. This photo becomes quite sexual because of the positioning of the camera above her, and the semi-modest placing of her hands covering an intimate feminine place. To describe what childhood really is, Mann utilizes truth in a few of her images. However staged this reality may be, there are some embarrassing and cringe worthy things that happen when you are growing up such as bed-wetting, chickenpox and bloody noses, so Mann documents these also. Jessie looks directly into the camera was a traumatic look in her eye while Emmet looks to have a feigned sadness than a genuine sadness. His arms are crossed defiantly, and he pulls his head away from the camera. The old man in bed is shrouded by light, making his face barely visible. These are private and personal moments that most families endure, and they are the ones that no camera-happy relative would want to capture on film. They are tragic and denied, and I can almost hear the mothers words attempting to explain what is happening to grandpa to her young children. He is Very Sick. Emmet does not seem to understand why he is being photographed, and he is presumably trying to hide his sadness. Jessie seems to be too young to understand that these are very private moments, and that they are not generally photographed. This image brings Manns work back into the realm of reality, and makes it familiar for viewers. Damaged child, 1984, Sally Mann Hayhook, 1989, Sally Mann Damaged Child is another reality based image, in which Jessie appears with a very swollen right eye. Her hair is cropped short, and her androgynous face is determined only by the frilly dress that she wears. Her face is the only thing in focus in the image, and it appears to be jutting out towards the viewer. She wears no smile in the image, and she looks sad and helpless. While other mothers are busy bragging about their child making the soccer team or winning a beauty pageant, Sally Mann is busy showing the less flattering side of motherhood. She is showing the maternal need to tend to her wounded child, and is not concerned about the beauty of it. This is real life and she is not afraid to show it. In my opinion, taking hotographs of her children is her way of showing her love for them, through capturing their lives on film. Jessie says She has a hard time letting us know how much she loves us. But Ive also realized that each one of those photographs was her way of capturing, if not in a hug or a kiss or a comment, how much she cared about us. Capturing the relationship of motherhood and childhood on film reveals a strange look into what a child is, and how they need a mother continua lly, yet still want to figure out their identity on their own so they push her away. Pesticides Effects There are many important issues in the world regarding the environment and it's affects on the average person. Though, the one that hits closest to home, worldwide, is the trust that individuals have in the food that they consume. Yet pesticides are still found daily in foods all around the world. Pesticides are toxins that are used by produce growers universally to control pests that can destroy crops. These toxins are being ingested by humans in the forms of fruits and vegetables that have remaining toxins on them. How safe are these toxins to humans and what is being done to safeguard the environment as well as the health of individuals? Does the average person consume harmful amounts of poison at every meal? If the levels are unsafe, why is this problem continuing to get a blind eye from the people who are supposed to protect society? These questions when asked only lead to more questions. Until things are done to change the systems of pesticide usage universally, society can never be sure as to the long term effects on our environment and what they are eating or giving to the future of our world, the children. In some foreign countries pesticides are used more frequently with legislative control than in the United States. In Mexico and South America, for example, many of the pesticides that the United States and Europe have banned, wind up being used on a majority of their produce crops. The largest problem with this is that Europe and the United States import from South America for produce all of the time. What good does it do to ban harmful agricultural chemicals to be used on domestically grown crops if crops in other countries are grown with these same harmful chemicals, and are then allowed to be imported? Mexico and South America are the leading suppliers of produce for the earth's population because their climate is very conducive to year around crops. Unfortunately those countries are also known for their large amount of insects of all varieties. These insects are steadily becoming more and more immune to toxins that are sprayed on crops. More than five hundred insects, one hundred and fifty plant diseases and two hundred and seventy weeds are now resistant to pesticides. Results are that U.S. growers as well, are steadily forced to apply more and stronger toxins. As the amount and the strength of the toxin increases, the immunity of the targeted insects to these toxins also increases. Total U.S. crop losses from insect damage has nearly doubled since 1945. Insecticide use during this same time has increased tenfold. This war will go on being waged until the game plan is changed. The produce export trade in some cities and countries constitutes the majority of their economy and they will protect the resulting income at all costs. These places have very little legislation to control chemical usage, and follow up on almost none of its effects. Officials do not care how it affects consumers, being adults or children. Even their own agricultural worker's health is of no concern. These officials only care about producing crops and exporting them with as little overhead as possible. The bottom line is, always has been, and always will be money. In Villa Juarez, Mexico, many children who work in the produce fields are coming down with mysterious illnesses and some people in this region put the blame directly on those children's contact with the chemical acephate and other pesticides that are used in that area. The use of acephate is illegal in the United States, but is perfectly legal in Mexico. Doctors in Juarez are treating unusually high amounts of cancer and also fifty to eighty cases of chemical poisoning per week in their agricultural workers. This continues to happen because the government and the growers do not take these illnesses seriously; the workers are expendable. Growers in Culcan Valley, Mexico use chemicals to increase production of produce sold in the U.S. every winter. Unfortunately, studies that were preformed by the Government Accounting office in Mexico showed that at least six pesticides that are illegal in the U.S. were still on the produce when it was exported. Moving on to South America, in Chile there are no clear guidelines governing the use of agricultural chemicals on produce crops. With a proverbial collective sigh of relief, the class was greeted with a pleasant professor offering a most interesting lesson plan on the writing in the discipline of psychology. After welcomed introductions class was underway and a new appreciation for my major was attained. Our first homework assignment required us to read and analyze an article entitled â€Å"Making Science Understandable to a Broad Audience† by Richard Reis. The article portrays the notion that we as those in search of educational advancement must accommodate the manner in which we write for individuals many whom are otherwise unaware. This piece I believe sets the tone for this course in its entirety and my perceptions as to what is seeks to achieve, in that to truly know and understand an idea or concept one must have the ability to correctly perceive and present information of the utmost importance to the vast majority. Throughout my college career I have strived to put forth my best effort and achieve a great standing in all my courses. I plan on not doing any different here, so upon perusing the course syllabus I noticed many assignments wherein groups were involved. In my past experience, sadly I have had many instances in which fellow group members became ‘clingers’ to my dedicated work whilst I labored on it. Assignments listed as anything prefaced by the dreaded utterance â€Å"Group,† made me question my position here. Despite my reservations I believe that those fellow students in my class are just as dedicated as I and wish to succeed just as much. Without further explanation of the group work involved, much of it looks fairly familiar to projects that I have done in past classes both in college and high school concerning poster presentations and literature reviews. My worries, other than those aforementioned, lie in the â€Å"Individual Components† of the course description and what they might entail. At least for me, when work pertaining to that of doling out constructive criticism is required I simply feel inadequate in telling others how to go about their work. Other than that one hiccup, the rest of the work to be done individually seems common or at least manageable. In the past I have kept a record or journal of daily events of significance, in that I can see doing well in keeping a research journal. Being accustomed to modern times and technology use should help serve me in using the â€Å"Learning E-Portfolios,† and submitting assignments online. My major is in psychology and therefore have read extensively on the subject as well as taken previous writing courses, all of which will hopefully aid me in doing well this semester. I feel as though this course will play towards my strengths and will be successful overall. Although, I do not expect to go without surprises, I trust this course to challenge my writing ability as well as my grasp on psychology ASSIGNMENT REFLECTION FORM 1. How would you describe your experience in working on this assignment (Was it difficult to begin? Did the ideas come easily or with difficulty? What obstacles did you face in the process of writing? How long did it take you?)? A: As with any paper, I found it slightly difficult to begin because I enjoy taking the time to organize my thoughts into a cohesive and coherent piece. In the writing process I found it difficult to completely fulfill the requirements in that the book contained in the courses required reading section had been backordered and in an attempt to continue, I had purchased a copy on Amazon.com and am sadly still awaiting its arrival. From beginning to end this essay took me around two hours to complete in its entirety. 2. What do you see as the strengths of this paper? A: I believe the strengths of this paper to be my honesty involving the course. It may or may not help with improvements and or changes in future assignments and course direction. 3. What do you see as areas for improvement in the paper? A: Not to sound clichà © but I believe that all papers still require improvement. No matter how many edits or drafts it takes there will always be one idea or point that may have been over expressed or a central one that had been simply left out completely. I may need to improve upon my ordering or overall flow of my paper to achieve a better read. 4. What did you learn (about yourself, the subject, writing, or reading) from doing this assignment? A: While writing this piece I learned that I truly enjoy expressing myself through writing. Although I consider myself to have a limited vocabulary I find nothing more exciting than to surprise someone with my work.
